As a psychologist, Külpe had established the Würzburg school, devoting himself to the experimental investigation of (imageless) thought. Besides that, Külpe contributed to general psychology, to the study of feelings, attention and many other topics. As a philosopher, Külpe developed Realism in an original and interesting manner. In his unfinished masterpiece Die Realisierung, he analyzes the intellectual path towards reality in the natural sciences, but also in the Geisteswissenschaften and metaphysics. His contributions to logic, ethics, aesthetics, together with his original interpretation of Kant’s thought and his discussion of contemporary German philosophy show his deep and partly still unexplored commitment to philosophy.
Unsurprisingly, Külpe’s legacy is manifold. Besides his critical relation to Wilhelm Wundt, his ideas influenced many psychologists and philosophers, including the young Martin Heidegger in his juvenile writing on the problem of reality.

Contributions concerning all of these aspects of Külpe’s thought are welcome.
