Merleau-Ponty and the Natural Sciences

Thematic Issue of Discipline Filosofiche XXIV, 2, 2014: Merleau-Ponty and the Natural Sciences
Volume Editor: Luca Vanzago

Thanks to the recent publication of the lecture courses held at the Collège de France in the 1950’s, Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy is now much better known in its later developments following the publication of the Phenomenology of Perception. The particular attention placed by Merleau-Ponty on the theme of nature, already acknowledged by the scholars, is thus clearly confirmed and shows the fecundity of the meditation of the French phenomenology with respect to several research areas that are most investigated today, from the neurosciences to evolutionary biology and ecology. The aim of this special issue is to deepen these research lines in order to examine Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenological and ontological approach and evaluate its value and limits, and at the same time discuss the naturalistic and reductionist tendencies that are prevalent in these fields in the light of Merleau-Ponty’s criticisms. Among the themes that can be suggested there are accordingly both papers dealing with Merleau-Ponty’s achievements regarding one particular field of research among those above outlined, and papers examining, from a Merleau-Pontian phenomenological standpoint, the main epistemological themes concerning the present state of scientific research.
